Jun 05, Bill rated it it was amazing. An engaging read found serendipitously!
In reading a history of trans-Appalachia pioneers, I came across references to "the Great Meadow. I learned not only that this referred to central Kentucky in the late s but also that an historical novel by this title was written in This popular novel about trans-Applachia migration and pioneer Kentucky was made into a movie in I'll be watching the movie tonight. G An engaging read found serendipitously! Great finds! A real discovery for me.
Elizabeth Madox Roberts has a very distinct writing style. As she writes about the inner thoughts of her heroine Diony Hall, her words beat a rhythm like a heartbeat which lasts throughout the story. I wasn't surprised to discover that Roberts also wrote poetry as her prose is so lyrical.

It took me a while to get into the book because of both the unusual style and the slow moving narrative but it was worth it. It took me a while to 'get into' this book but once I had I enjoyed it. I liked the contrast and links between Diony's everyday life and her inner thoughts. I also thought it was a interesting portrayal of early settler life in America as seen from the perspective of the s, surprisingly modern actually.
Jul 14, Jeremy Sayers rated it really liked it. Though this is an old book, it reads with a freshness not found in a great deal of more contemporary novels. Nov 25, Doug rated it it was amazing Shelves: kentucky. The language of this book prompted me to look up some of Roberts' poetry.
I don't know much about poetry, but my impression is that Roberts was a better poet when she was writing novels than when she was writing poetry. At first, her most poetic phrases in "The Great Meadow" could be jarring underscoring that poetry is more than just good prose with line separations, and it doesn't necessarily work in a novel , but as I got used to it, I enjoyed coming across the occasional sentence that made m The language of this book prompted me to look up some of Roberts' poetry.
At first, her most poetic phrases in "The Great Meadow" could be jarring underscoring that poetry is more than just good prose with line separations, and it doesn't necessarily work in a novel , but as I got used to it, I enjoyed coming across the occasional sentence that made more sense when read over and felt, rather than reread and parsed. However, the strength of Roberts writing is her ability to describe in detail the everyday life of Diony and her work especially at the spinning wheel. These sentences were instantly felt but also well worth rereading and scrutinizing.
The story is simple and told compellingly. Both of these trails lead to Sieur de Monts Spring, a popular site in the park. To the right is one of the country's oldest golf courses. The trail continues next to the golf course as it turns right onto Kebo Street and crosses the road. Just past a cemetery on the left is a connector trail to the Stratheden Path, which also leads to Sieur de Monts, and Kebo Mt.
The trail again crosses Kebo Street with the golf course on both sides. After returning to the woods it curves right paralleling Cromwell Harbor Road and passes another cemetery just before it turns right and descends to Ledgelawn Avenue. For a more direct route back into town, continue on Cromwell Harbor Road until it crosses Ledgelawn Ave.
Numerous hiking trails can be accessed from the Sieur de Monts area and there is now a connector trail that provides access to the Gorge Path and the North Ridge of Cadillac Mountain. The trailhead is located out of town on Ledgelawn Avenue and has no parking. Turn left on Ledgelawn Avenue. Continue walking out of town.
After crossing Cromwell Harbor Road and a small bridge, look on the right for the first opportunity to access the trail. This access takes the loop counter clockwise. For a more direct route into the park continue on Ledgelawn for 0. The walk up and down Ledgelawn Avenue will add 1. Bus service runs between June 23 and Columbus Day. Log in now. Log In.
